A Surgical Prescriber’s Guide for Acute Pain Management and Opioid Stewardship

This course is intended to serve as a comprehensive guide for acute pain management and opioid stewardship by a surgical prescriber.

The American College of Surgeons designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. 

This course has been approved by the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board as meeting the requirements for a continuing education course on the responsible opioid prescribing guidelines per Med 13.03(3) of the Wisconsin Administrative Code. The course has been approved for 3.0 credits.

Participants will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course. You are required to retain that document and submit it to DSPS if specifically asked to do so in an audit.

Program Objectives

This activity is designed for physicians. Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the role of surgical prescribing in the opioid epidemic.
  • Recognize prolonged opioid use as a relatively common complication following surgery.
  • Describe components of multimodal pain management strategies.
  • Design and implement safe and effective opioid sparing pain management strategies in surgical patients.
  • Explain safe and effective strategies for disposal of unused medications after surgery.
